Spring of Hope Church Of God In Christ
Liberation is the Gospel
We have Black preachers out here attacking Liberation Theology while denying the existence of systemic racism, which made it necessary.
Jesus defined His ministry in Luke 4:18, not as a prosperity seminar, not as a culture-war crusade, not as a political endorsement, and not as a campaign against marginalized people. He declared that He came to preach good news to the poor, deliverance to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and liberty to the oppressed.
That’s not “woke.” That’s Jesus.
It’s a tragedy when Black preachers are more offended by their colleagues who confront racial injustice than they are by injustice itself. They have no difficulty condemning those who speak against racism, inequity, voter suppression, economic exploitation, and discrimination, yet they never that same energy toward the systems that produce those realities. Their theology has become so comfortable with the status quo that they mistake silence for spirituality and complacency for biblical faithfulness.
Luke 4 leaves no room for that kind of selective Christianity. Jesus was not ambiguous. He did not describe his mission in vague or abstract terms. Jesus announced that He came to stand with the poor, the captive, the broken, and the oppressed. If your preaching consistently comforts the powerful while criticizing those who challenge injustice, then your message bears no resemblance to the ministry Jesus described for Himself.
The Black Church has always understood that salvation is personal, but it is never private. The Gospel changes hearts, but it also challenges systems. Jesus didn’t just save souls; He restored dignity, confronted injustice, and stood with those society pushed to the margins.
Before mocking Liberation Theology or accusing marginalized people for their own maltreatment, read Luke 4 again.
Jesus already preached it.
