The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office is joining law enforcement agencies across Illinois for a statewide speed enforcement campaign throughout the month of July.

Deputies will conduct increased traffic enforcement with a focus on speeding and other traffic violations to help reduce crashes and keep motorists safe on Sangamon County roadways.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office encourages drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits and make safe decisions behind the wheel. A few extra minutes is never worth risking a life.

Missing Persons 07/07/2026

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is sharing this podcast at the request of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado. In 1981, 25-year-old Cynthia “Cindy” Atterberry and 30-year-old Oscar “Joe” McNear traveled from Springfield, Illinois to the Pike National Forest in Douglas County, Colorado. Neither were seen again.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this missing persons case, and is asking for the public’s assistance. The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for a Grant Administrator / Office Manager with the Central Illinois Enforcement Group (CIEG).

This position is responsible for managing grant and financial records, maintaining CIEG accounts, preparing reports, coordinating with participating agencies, and supporting the daily operations of the Central Illinois Enforcement Group.

Applications are now open for the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Police Academy.

The Citizen Police Academy is a free, 10-week program designed to give community members an inside look at Sheriff’s Office operations, training, and public safety services. Participants will hear directly from deputies, investigators, supervisors, and specialized units while gaining a better understanding of modern law enforcement through classroom instruction, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and discussion.

Sessions are held every other Tuesday evening from August 18 through December 22, 2026, at the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

Applicants must:
• Be at least 21 years of age
• Live, work, or attend school in Sangamon County
• Successfully complete a limited background investigation

Class size is limited to 15 participants and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
