Driving down the road in Samaná (Dominican Republic) was an experience in itself. One moment we saw the beautiful forest, mountains, and colorful plants and the next moment, little houses, some half built, yards bare with dirt or filled with junk, garbage along the roads, and dogs running loose. Houses and restaurants had black containers on the roof to collect water for drinking.

We were told the average monthly income is $700 US dollars. Tourism is just starting to take off and that will make such a positive on this community. Everyone we met was nice and welcoming. The locals waved to us as we drove by, especially the school child who jumped up and down.

Visiting a town like that makes you more humble. You realize how lucky you are. To have a nice place to live. To have food on the table. To have a job that pays well. To have funds to go on vacation or buy that extra item at the store. It validates it’s not about the material things owned but the non-material items that are important: love, family, friends, community, being grateful for what you have, being a good, kind person, helping others (and animal), and just trying your best everyday.
