⚖️ Every week, I watch people walk into the courthouse believing divorce is just a matter of filling out the right forms.

I understand why. Forms are available. There are resources. It can look straightforward.

But here’s what I’ve learned after years of practicing family law:

The paperwork is rarely the hard part.

The hard part is knowing:
• What rights you’re giving up without realizing it.
• What should—and should not—go into your judgment.
• How retirement accounts, debts, taxes, businesses, and real estate should be handled.
• Whether the parenting plan you’re signing will actually work six months from now.
• What language today could create years of litigation tomorrow.

By the time someone realizes a mistake was made, the judgment has often already been entered. Fixing it is usually far more expensive—and sometimes impossible.

Could some people successfully handle their own divorce?

Certainly. If there are no children, no real assets, no disagreements, and both parties fully understand the legal consequences, it may be appropriate. And I see many folks who think this is what they have, but it isn’t.

But those cases are the exception—not the rule.

A good divorce lawyer doesn’t simply complete forms.

We identify problems before they become expensive ones.
We negotiate from experience.
We protect your future—not just your present.

The goal isn’t simply to get divorced.

The goal is to get it right.

Because the decisions you make today may affect your finances, your children, and your peace of mind for years to come.
