Where they gathered was called a Farmers Market, typically around a town square or the major shopping district. (Now days they call this 'Buying Direct' and it sometimes requires a membership to do so) We just call it an old fashioned farmers' market, The Greater Springfield Farmers' Market (at Battlefield Mall).
