Tape can be good, but it can be a waste. I never tape floors.
Filling holes and cracks with compound is very easy to do and improves the quality a great deal.
First peel off, then spray it on. Only real way, that I found, to blend popcorn texture is with a hopper. Those spray cans don’t work as well.
