Love this. Healthy farming makes healthy eating, which makes healthy families!
Join us in honoring some of history’s most notable Black innovators in agriculture who laid the foundation for farming as we know it today!
Let’s hear it for a man born right here in the Ozarks! George Washington Carver is well known for his work developing new products made from peanuts, but did you know that he was also a soil health advocate and developed a new method for crop rotation?
Carver realized that “soil in many southern states had been stripped of essential nutrients like nitrogen from repetitive cotton planting processes,” and “promoted practices that seem commonplace today like composting soil with organic matter,” (gillsonions).
Not only that, but Carver was the first African American to earn a bachelor of Science degree and went on to study plant diseases, attain a Master of Agriculture degree, and share his agricultural knowledge with other Southern farmers to help them save money and produce higher yields on their farms.
