AWC UIS Communication Club

The Association for Women in Communication is the one organization that recognizes the complex relationships that exist across communications disciplines. Modern communicators must demonstrate competence in varied disciplines and be able to network and make career moves across the broad spectrum of communications fields. Disciplines represented within the association include print and broadcast jo

urnalism, television and radio production, film, advertising, public relations, marketing, graphic design, multi-media design, and photography. The list is continually growing as the profession expands into the newer media. Founded in 1909 as Theta Sigma Phi at the University of Washington, the organization has evolved from a student honorary women’s journalism fraternity to a strong national network of communicators in a broad range of disciplines. The founding principles of Theta Sigma Phi serve as touchstones for AWC today: to promote the advancement of women in all fields of communications, to work for First Amendment rights and responsibilities of communicators, to recognize distinguished professional achievements, and to promote high professional standards throughout the communication field. The Matrix Foundation, AWC’s charitable foundation, provides scholarships and supports educational research and publications. AWC’s student and professional chapters offer educational programming for their members. Through its local chapter programs and sessions at the AWC National Conference, and online business courses, AWC provides members with the opportunity for training in leadership skills. Member Profiles

AWC has more than 2,000 active members, ranging in age from 18-91+. The average age is 41; most members are females from urban or suburban settings. Response from the AWC member survey indicates 94% are college graduates, 47% hold graduate study or degrees; just over half work in for-profit businesses and most work in companies with fewer than 100 employees; most are salaried, full-time employees; approximately 40% are in the executive or management roles. Of those who responded, about half work in public relations, marketing or communications management; the others work in fields including journalism, graphic design, photography, Web development, and publishing.

Hello Everyone,

We had a AWC UIS Com Club meeting on Thursday, April 9, and a few new things emerged from the meeting.

First, we regret to inform everyone that the upcoming event on Tuesday, April 14, the Networking Event, has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We will not be able to re-schedule the event due to time constraints imposed with the semester ending soon. However, the Networking and Etiquette event scheduled for May 5th is still on and we look forward to everyone joining us. However, the date is being changed to May 4th due to room scheduling in PAC being moved. The event is free, and numerous professional speakers are still joining us for an informative evening.

Another important news piece is that when the Fall semester begins, the AWC UIS Communication Club will be holding elections to replace the outgoing president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. These positions will be open to any member of the AWC UIS Com Club, and the positions will be available to undergrad or graduate students.

Also pertinent to the Fall semester is that AWC UIS would like input from members planning events ahead of time for the upcoming semester. It is important to consider differing ideas and input regarding the direction the AWC UIS Club should go in recruiting new members, and planning interesting and interactive events to increase our potential on and off-campus. Any current or new members can contribute ideas, and help make the AWC UIS Club a better campus organization.

The next meeting for the AWC UIS Club is on April 9th, at 4:30-5:30 in the WUIS offices. Attendees should plan on attending that evening's panel meeting sponsored by the Young Professional Marketers at 6 p.m. in PAC F.

The AWC is collaborating on the event, and we will have a variety of professionals who will be attending the meeting to share their experience and advice for students. The focus for the evening is "Building a Personal Brand".
