In the year 5000, humanity had reached a technological pinnacle that seemed impossible just a few centuries ago. They had mastered interstellar travel, eradicated the ability for disease to thrive, and even discovered ways to manipulate time itself. However, the further they got into their advancements, the more they felt a deep sense of responsibility to their ancestors, who had struggled to achieve the progress they now enjoyed. Their ancestors had nearly wiped civilization out entirely many time throughout history. War would reset the populations, and the surviving people would slowly become more peaceful. Each war created a generation of survivors that would grow towards peace and advancement.

To honor those who came before them, a team of scientists and engineers devised a plan to travel back in time to the year 2023, with the goal of delivering some of their advanced technology to the people of that time. They knew that their actions could have far-reaching consequences, but they believed that the benefits outweighed the risks. They wanted to help humanity avoid the worst parts of their known history.

The team selected a small town in rural America as their destination, hoping to avoid too much attention. Springfield, Ohio became base. They arrived in the middle of the night, using their advanced hypnosis technology to remain unseeable from view. As people got within range, sound waves would paralyze their eye’s and project memorized visualizations to recreate their surroundings without the scientist projecting. However, they were still tangible in the real world. They set up a temporary lab in an abandoned warehouse on Burnett Road and began to work.

Over the next few weeks, they developed several devices that would change the course of history. They created a nano-vaccine that could cure all known diseases, machines that could produce unlimited clean energy, 3D printers for gigantic structures, and a neural implant that would enhance cognitive abilities. They also left behind detailed instructions on how to manufacture these devices, hoping that the people of 2023 would continue to improve upon their designs. Earth’s greatest thinkers were privately invited to a test that would determine which of them would be the best to carry on and spread the advancements. There were 200 people selected across the world and they worked in unison. They operated above every government and the people everywhere cherished these heroes.

The team returned to the year 5000, feeling a sense of satisfaction that they had fulfilled their mission. However, they soon realized that their actions had created a ripple effect that they could not have predicted. Although the people they know and loved were all the same, the world was not.

In the year 5000, they discovered that their technology had been reverse-engineered and improved upon in ways they had never imagined. The people of the 21st century had taken their gift and run with it, creating a world that was far more advanced than they had ever thought possible. The nano-vaccine ended a reigning pandemic and brought humanity closer than ever before, much sooner than the original event took place. Things were still nowhere near perfect, but they much better than they once were. They mastered efficient energy first by developing small portable machines that could endlessly create wireless clean energy, but then they bece able to build much larger machines that could sustain areas greater than a five mile radius. This created many jobs to manage the new technology. The 3D printers created the most efficient housing imaginable and created many jobs across the word to manage the infrastructure required for the new housing. Some folks decided to stay in their homes, but everyone was happy because they could easily and affordably be anywhere they wanted. The neural links were much better and much less intrusive than anything we were working on at that time. Schools essentially became safe zones for individuals to self-teach a catalog of curriculums. We were becoming much smarter at faster rates. Each generation produced more unimaginable advancements than the ones before.

The scientists and engineers of the year 5000 were humbled by the knowledge that their actions had played a small part in the progress of humanity. They knew that the future was uncertain, but they knew that the people of the past had used their gift wisely, and that they carried humanity slightly closer to the edge of eternity.

They had undone the Big Bang, but they had also undone themselves in the process. And so, in the end, the universe was left to exist in its natural state, without the interference of humankind.
