What is a capital gain?
It is the profit that comes from selling a capital asset, such as stock, for more than the investor paid for it.
Long-term capital gains are assets that were held longer than one year. These are taxed at a more favorable rate which ranges from 0%-15% depending on your level of taxable income.
Short-term capital gains are assets that were held shorter than one year. These gains are taxed at your ordinary income rate.
