Day 2 of MedQuest at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) was packed with inspiration, learning, and hands on experiences.

The day began with an incredible Health Careers Panel where students had the opportunity to hear firsthand from a diverse group of SVMC healthcare professionals. A huge thank you to William Hunter, (Pharmacy), Janis Yanotti, RN (Nursing Information Systems), Milna Nunes (Physical Therapy), Mindy Dame, MS, RN (Intensive Care & Women and Children’s Services), Melissa Goldstein, MSN, RN, NOD-BC, CNE (Nurse Clinical Education), John Stansbury (Radiology), Jeanette Burhans (Pastoral Care), Lillie Jutras (Social Work), and Kim Webster, RN, (Patient Advocacy/Risk Management) for sharing their unique career journeys, experiences, and words of encouragement. Their stories gave students an inside look at the many paths available in healthcare.

Next, our outstanding MedQuest Mentors, Eric Goodney, and Daron Forohar, led Learning Module 2, where students explored the anatomy of the lower extremities, learned about common injuries, put their knowledge into action by assessing simulated injuries and practicing splinting techniques. It was an exciting opportunity to build real-world clinical skills.

We wrapped the day with our “class photo” featuring students, mentors, SVTAHEC staff, and a special guest-SVMC President and CEO, Estevan Garcia, MD.

Tomorrow is our final day for MedQuest at SVMC. Next week we start session 2 at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center (July 29-31.

After a 3 year pause, we’re thrilled that our signature summer MedQuest Day Program is officially back!

Today marked our exciting comeback at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt., where 16 enthusiastic high school students suited up in scrubs and jumped right into the world of healthcare.

After breaking the ice with a fun team building activity, the students tackled their first learning module: “Outdoor Wilderness Medicine: Ticks, Tick-Borne Illnesses, and Heat Illness” led by MedQuest Mentors Margaux Eller and Tariq Qayum from the The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont.

With the growing number of ticks and tick-borne illnesses, this couldn’t have been a more timely topic. Students learned how to:

•Identify common ticks
•Safely remove a tick
•Recognize early signs of tick-borne illnesses and prevention strategies
•Distinguish between heat exhaustion and stroke

The learning didn’t stop there! Next, students headed toward off for job shadow experiences throughout the hospital exploring departments like Cardiology, Pediatrics, Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Radiology, getting a first hand look at what it is like to work in the medical field.

This is just the beginning of an incredible 3 days of learning, discovery, and inspiration. We can’t wait to share more!

Stay tuned for highlights from Day 2 tomorrow (Tuesday)!
