One of the driest places on Earth is quietly turning green, and the numbers are almost impossible to believe. The Mecca region alone saw a 600 percent surge in vegetation cover in just five months, from August to December 2023, driven by unusually heavy rainfall reaching up to 200 mm in certain areas. 🌿 Since late 2022, heavy rainfall has brought an unexpected transformation to the deserts near Mecca and Medina, turning parts of the arid landscape green. Scientists say this echoes conditions from 7,000 years ago when Arabia was a far lusher land.
This is not just rain doing the work. The Saudi Green Initiative, launched in March 2021, aims to plant 10 billion trees, restore 40 million hectares of degraded land, and turn 30 percent of Saudi Arabia into nature reserves. Over 1.1 million trees have already been planted across Medina alone, using recycled water from treatment plants to sustain them. 🌱 By mid-2025, around 151 million new trees had been planted and 500,000 hectares rehabilitated, according to the Saudi Environment Minister. A land once called impossible is slowly proving everyone wrong.
