Two members of the Springdale Fire Department recently traveled to San Antonio, Texas, to participate in SAREX 2026 (Search and Rescue Exercise) as part of the Arkansas Helicopter Rescue Team (AHRT).

AHRT is a specialized team comprised of personnel from the Springdale, Fayetteville, and Rogers Fire Departments, working alongside the Arkansas Air National Guard. Throughout the week, participants trained in a variety of realistic rescue scenarios involving helicopter operations, search missions, and technical rescue techniques.

Exercises like SAREX help ensure rescue personnel remain prepared to respond to complex emergencies, natural disasters, and rescue incidents throughout Arkansas and the surrounding region.

Training opportunities like this provide valuable experience that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting. By working alongside partner agencies and practicing in challenging environments, firefighters continue to build the skills, teamwork, and confidence needed to serve their communities and assist with specialized rescue operations whenever they are needed.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of presenting a Letter of Commendation to CJ McCasland of the Bentonville Fire Department in recognition of his decisive and life-saving actions at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 49 involving a trapped victim.

Prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, CJ quickly took command of the situation by directing bystanders in the use of fire extinguishers and water bottles to prevent the vehicle from igniting. His calm leadership, quick thinking, and selfless actions played a critical role in protecting the victim involved until responding units arrived on scene.
