The design comes from that conversation. Every room, every detail, every decision traces back to something that was said in that first hour.

The three projects we're documenting this spring each began that way. You can see it in every design decision that followed.

The Legacy Playhouse sits at the highest point in the county outside Chillicothe.

The view from this site — across the valley floor, to the forested hillside beyond — is one of those things that stops a conversation. You stand there and you stop talking.

Every room at the rear of this home faces that view. The entire interior-outdoor living sequence was designed around it. The house doesn't just have a view. It's oriented in service of it.

At Rutherford Retreat, the site told us exactly what to do.

The approach — down a private drive, through a winding forest path, and then the slow rise above the pond — wasn't something we designed. It was something we found. Our job was to honor it.

Every design decision at this project was made in service of that arrival sequence and the view it reveals. The home sits at the crest of the rise. The glass wall faces the pond. The boathouse anchors the far edge of the water.

When the design follows the land, the result feels inevitable. That's what we're after.
