🚨 Outdoor Warning Sirens: What They Do (and Don't Do) 🚨

One of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor warning sirens is that they are designed to alert you inside your home or wake you up while you're sleeping.
They're not.
Outdoor warning sirens are intended to warn people who are outdoors that dangerous weather is approaching and that they should seek shelter and get more information immediately.

You should not be relying on a siren to alert during a tornado warning if you are inside, day or night. Instead everyone and every household should have multiple ways to receive alerts, including:
• Wireless Emergency Alerts on your cell phone (make sure these are turned on!)
• A NOAA Weather Radio
• Trusted weather apps
• Local media and official emergency management communications
In Warren County, outdoor warning sirens can be activated countywide or by quadrant based on the location of the tornado warning. These quadrants divide the county into four warning zones (NW, NE, SW, and SE).

It's also important to remember that sirens are owned and maintained by the local jurisdiction in which they are located. If you notice a siren that appears damaged or is not functioning properly, please contact the city, village, or township responsible for that area.
Outdoor warning sirens are one layer of the warning system, not the only layer. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive critical alerts, especially while you're indoors or sleeping in the middle of the night.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom, marking the end of slavery in the United States.

As we reflect on this important day, we are reminded that Springboro has its own place in the story of freedom. Our community was an important stop along the Underground Railroad, with local residents risking their safety to help enslaved individuals on their journey to freedom. That legacy of courage, compassion, and standing up for what is right remains an important part of our community’s history.

Juneteenth provides an opportunity to honor those who fought for freedom, reflect on our nation’s past, and reaffirm our commitment to treating every person in Springboro with dignity, fairness, and respect.
