Freedom Reins

I feel like I’ve been living in a bad dream… 💔 Queenie is doing okay. She is stable & bright. There isn’t an exact answer to why she can’t get up, but there are a few things that probably all contribute. The biggest being xrays show she has chronic disc degeneration & osteoarthritis in her lumbar. This isn’t totally unexpected at her age, but the vet doesn’t think she will regain full function in her hind end.

She is getting supportive care & is on a fentanyl patch right now to ensure she isn’t in pain. As long as she remains stable, I plan to bring her home Monday so she can spend her last days with Nina, Sebastian, Dorothy & Penny. Then I will have a vet come to the property to euthanize her. She would rather be home. I tell her their names when I visit her & she gets so excited & moos.

She’s still so engaging, bright & aware. I brought her her favorite grain (Fibrenergy horse feed) which she enthusiastically ate along with some cookies. Nina takes after Queenie in almost every way - her beauty, her intelligence, her determination, her strong will, her love for food lol. Anyone who meets her, loves her because she is so unbelievably kind & gentle (Nina did not take after this trait lol).

I love the horses, but anyone who knows me knows my cows are my world. I don’t want to think of a world without Queenie. I know she’s old, but I thought we had more time. This has been one of the hardest weeks of my life.

Queenie isn’t a rescue, but like Nina she is part of the rescue. She’s here day in & day out with me & the horses. I’m not asking for help with her expenses, but I’m asking for help with the horses vet/hay bills so I can be fully present with her in her last days with us.

We have a lot of ground to cover for the $10k knockout fundraiser & any help with this or hay this week means more than I could ever express with words. I will never get this time back with her.
