On a single night in January 2025, 3,325 people were experiencing homelessness across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties. 1,282 were living completely unsheltered—a 15.8% increase from the year before.

But behind every statistic is a person.

A man. A woman. A veteran. Someone's son. Someone's daughter.

Many are living with mental illness, addiction, or the lasting wounds of childhood trauma. They aren't beyond hope—they're people created in the image of God who desperately need to know they are seen, loved, and not forgotten.

For more than 17 years, every Saturday, we've served beneath bridges and along the streets of Greater Houston with hot meals, hygiene supplies, prayer, and compassionate relationships. We don't just hand out food—we share the hope of Jesus, one person at a time.

What a day to be an American — and what a day to honor the fathers in our lives!

The United States has punched its ticket to the knockout round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Australia 2-0 in front of a raucous crowd in Seattle today — the first time since 1930 that the U.S. has won back-to-back matches at the World Cup.

We are celebrating with the rest of the nation — and we're celebrating something even more important today:
Happy Father's Day to every dad, grandfather, stepdad, foster father, and father figure who shows up. 🙏

Fathers matter more than words can measure.

Research consistently shows that a father's presence — his voice, his guidance, his sacrifice — shapes a child's sense of identity, safety, and self-worth in ways that last a lifetime. Children with engaged fathers are more likely to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. They carry that foundation into adulthood.

But what happens when that foundation is missing?

The data is sobering. A significant portion of the men and women we serve on the streets of Harris and Montgomery Counties grew up without a consistent father figure — and that absence left a wound. Childhood complex trauma — the kind born from abandonment, instability, neglect, and broken attachment — is one of the most powerful predictors of adult homelessness and substance use disorder. It rewires the brain's stress response. It creates a hunger for belonging that is never quite filled. It whispers a lie that says: You are not worth staying for.

Absent fathers don't just leave a house — they leave a void that the streets, the bottle, and the needle are all too eager to fill.
This is not said to shame. It is said to remind us of the stakes.
If you are a father reading this today — you are doing something eternally important. Stay. Engage. Show up. Your presence is protection. Your love is prevention.

And if you are someone who grew up without that — there is a Father who never leaves. There is hope beyond the bridges that have been burned.

The Neuroscience of Survival

When a child grows up in a home filled with chaos, abuse, or neglect, their brain does something remarkable and tragic at the same time: it rewires itself to survive.

The amygdala — the brain's alarm system — becomes chronically activated. The prefrontal cortex, which governs reasoning, planning, and impulse control, gets crowded out. The nervous system learns to live in a state of constant threat.

This isn't weakness. This is biology doing exactly what it was designed to do.

But here's the devastating consequence: that same survival-wired brain makes it nearly impossible to hold a job, trust a case worker, follow a housing program's rules, or accept help from a stranger.

This is why Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) — which stems from prolonged childhood trauma rather than a single event — is such a powerful force behind chronic homelessness. A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress found that homeless individuals showed significantly higher rates of C-PTSD symptoms compared to the general population, including profound difficulties with emotional regulation and self-perception.

In Houston's 2025 Point-in-Time Count, 56% of homeless individuals reported a mental health condition, and 74% of those said it significantly limited their ability to work or live independently.

At Hope Beyond Bridges, our volunteers don't arrive on Saturday morning with clipboards and requirements. They arrive with hot food, a warm smile, and a genuine desire to learn someone's name.

That consistency — showing up week after week without an agenda — is the very thing that begins to rewire the distrust. It's what slowly coaxes someone from their survival brain back into their thinking brain.

Restoration begins with safety. Safety begins with relationship.
