Why Learn CPR?

Why would learning basic rescue skills be important to the average person who is not a healthcare professional?

Because you might come across an emergency situation on any given day and you might feel helpless and compelled to act, but you don't know how. This could be a family member who suddenly collapses with chest pain, a child walking down the street whose parent is hysterical because the child is choking and they have no idea what to do or you witness the person crossing the street in front of you who is struck down by a speeding car which comes out of nowhere. Do you know what to do to try to help the victim until emergency services arrive?

Hopefully, you never encounter these situations, but if you do and you have taken the responsible steps to get training, you will be empowered to act and to do the best that can to try to save a life.

As a healthcare provider who has done CPR on probably a few hundred patients over 30+ years, I personally did not believe too strongly in the concept of saving someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest, because in my particular work settings, the patient was often too far gone by the time that lifesaving measures were started, but that once in a lifetime experience happened for me and my team and we were able to successfully resuscitate an individual who sustained a myocardial infarction and who developed an unstable heart rhythm and with rapid deployment of the AED and continuous CPR, we brought him back and he was transferred to a local hospital with an intact heartbeat and he recovered in only a few days.

So now, much more than ever, I believe that these lifesaving measures DO WORK and the quicker CPR, AED and other techniques are initiated, the better chance the victim has to live and recover.

So, even if you are hesitant or on the fence, why not take a small leap of faith and be a better person for yourself and your community. You have nothing to lose, and possibly a lot to gain. Thanks for reading!
