Inventor/Innovator Edwin Land's grandfather and his family escaped the Jewish persecution under Tsar Alexander III, sailing from Odessa and landing in America at Castle Garden in New York City. As often happened during that era of immigration, their name was changed from the original Russian surname of Salomonovitch to that of Land. Settling in Brooklyn, NY, Grandfather Land began a scrap metal business, which was taken up by his son, Harry. Edwin was born to Harry and Martha Land in 1909.
