🌟 A Lesson in Embodied Boundaries From My 6 Year-Old 🌟
Ever had that sinking feeling when you agree to something, only to realize later that it doesn't sit right with you? We've all been there, and it's a lesson my 6 year-old daughter recently learned in a playful, yet powerful way.
Playing with the "big girls" on the street, my daughter excitedly agreed to be painted with red chalk paste. The fun quickly turned into discomfort as her face, hair, arms, legs, and clothes were covered in the messy, red mixture.
As she walked into the house with a frown, I knew instantly what had happened – she had experienced the all-too-familiar effects of the 'Good Woman Narrative,' where we say yes to please others, even if it means stifling our own feelings and boundaries.
This was a valuable teaching moment. I immediately validated that she didn't want the chalk all over her, but she couldn't find her voice. She was afraid to speak up. I shared (age-appropriate) stories of when I'd made similar mistakes and how important it is to prioritize her safety needs, even if it's not what others want.
In the end, I asked her what she learned from the experience and she said, "When I don't like something, the right thing is to say it right away. I don't have to worry about what other people want if my body says it's not okay."
👏👏👏👏👏
I believe the lessons were further integrated when she had to get a bath and scrub head to toe to get the red off her scalp and skin. 😬

Hey ladies! 💪 Did you know that the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission just released a new dashboard of pay data that highlights the persisting gender pay gap? 😱 It's pretty eye-opening to see just how much work still needs to be done in closing this gap. According to the data, women are still trailing behind in terms of earnings, with no states, jobs, or industries where women outearned men. In fact, a whopping 71% of high earners were men. 😔
It's clear that we still have a long way to go in achieving gender equity, but the first step is having transparency with pay data from employers. The more we know, the more we can push for change. 💰
Kim Elsesser's article dives deeper into this issue, and it's definitely worth a read. Let's keep fighting for equal pay and the future of work that values and rewards everyone equally! 💫

Because I believe that one of the most powerful accelerants of women's career success is knowledge sharing, I invite you to join my upcoming Executive Roundtable. It's free. It's virtual. It will give you valuable insights into how to elevate your communication during uncomfortable moments so you speak up with confidence and authenticity.
💡 Traditional leadership development often fails to equip women with strategies to effectively address gender bias. Much of what is commonly suggested for women to do instead reinforces the harmful stereotypes that they are 'too emotional' or 'too much.'
🚀 The focus of this roundtable "Communication that Gets Buy-In and Compels Action from Teams and Stakeholders" is to facilitate peer-to-peer discussion about practical and effective ways to communicate that get our voices heard, our ideas validated, and builds trust for our initiatives.
There are 3 more seats available for women in upper leadership for this virtual event: March 26th, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST, Zoom
