Last evening, after a nearly 8 hr shift, on a Friday of course, I got a call about a leaking hydrant. What we found was a hydrant that had been hit so hard it not only snapped the stem, it snapped the pipe it was attached to. After turning off nine valves to isolate the leak because of looping systems, our partners, RLT, were able to dig it out of what had essentially become quicksand. They were able to fix the pipe and the hydrant, insert a valve in the pipe to the hydrant, and we were finally able to carefully turn valves on to restore water by 4:00AM.
Y’all, I got to work at 8:00AM on Friday 2/27. I worked 20 hours with my crew and our utility partners to fix something that someone hit then ran from. I got home just after 4:30AM Saturday 2/28.
That driver not only damaged public property, they cost residents hours of water availability, funds to fix it, and a large increase in our next PWC bill. Money that could have gone towards restocking our repair supplies, replacing service lines, or contracting out a major project in our older sections.
Now this is done, done right, and done for years to come. Even if someone hits it again.
By the way, if anyone has any information about this hydrant being hit, please let the Spring Lake Police Department know. Thank you
