Larger construction companies are doing random performance evaluations when skill levels are questioned by inspectors.

Excavators in Texas have damaged pipelines more than 4,800 times since the beginning of 2026, frequently causing highly explosive gas leaks. That includes over 1,000 incidents in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton counties. A KERA analysis of Railroad Commission of Texas "pipeline accident and incident reporting" data also found that many excavators had not contacted a notification center that arranges for the marking of underground utility lines free of charge. #811

Job growth smashes expectations.

At least five people were killed, and nearly four dozen more were injured, in a crash in Virginia overnight when a bus plowed into several vehicles near a work zone on Interstate 95, according to the Virginia State Police. The driver of the bus could face charges, police said. The accident took place at about 2:35 a.m. ET in Stafford County when a bus, operated by E&P Travel, was heading from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina. The bus "failed to slow for traffic" and crashed into six vehicles, state police said. The bus first struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which then hit an Acura SUV and additional vehicles. Four people in the Acura were killed, along with one person in the Suburban. The four people killed in the Acura, which caught fire after the collision, were identified as a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, state police said. CBS News Boston learned that they were a family of four from Greenfield, Massachusetts, who were on their way to a wedding in South Carolina. They were identified to CBS News Boston as Dmitri Doncev, his wife Ecterina, their daughter Emily and son Mark.
