One of the most powerful thought work tools I learned from my life coach is the phrase: “This is the moment when…” or “This is the part where…”

It creates just enough distance between you and your thoughts to interrupt a spiral.

Because the truth is: you are not your thoughts. You are simply having a thought.

After court, I sometimes catch myself thinking:Could I have said more? Was I good enough?
Now I pause and say:“This is the part where I question everything I just did in court.”
The thought doesn’t disappear, but I can see it for what it is: a mental pattern, not the truth.

You can use this with negative interactions too.

Opposing counsel was rude and your brain keeps replaying it?“This is the part where my brain replays that confrontation on a loop like a bad courtroom drama.”

Left a networking event wondering if you were awkward?“This is the moment when I judge myself for being human in a social setting.”
Sometimes that tiny bit of distance is all it takes to break the loop.

Next time your mind starts spiraling, try it:“This is the moment when…” or “This is the part where…” and see if it helps.

Tonight I had the ultimate privilege of attending Judge Venable’s retirement party, 15 years after clerking for her. It was a truly special evening.

A few highlights: I got to reunite with several of her former law clerks, including one who flew in from California, and catch up with so many familiar faces. We were seated at the “Law Clerks” table, and at one point someone came up and asked who we were currently clerking for. If you happen to read this, thank you for making us feel young again. 😊🙌🏾❤️

There were incredible speeches throughout the night. Her sister shared heartfelt reflections, her husband told a beautiful love story and it was also wonderful seeing her daughter and granddaughter, who has grown up so much in the 15 years since I first met her when I started my clerkship and will undoubtably continue the legacy.

The County also put together a law clerk compilation video, which was such a meaningful tribute from all of us.

Judge Venable’s own remarks were deeply inspiring. She thanked so many people who helped shape her journey and reminded all of us how important it is to lift others along the way.

And her portrait is stunning. It perfectly captures the qualities that defined her time on the bench: professionalism, grace, integrity, wisdom, fairness, thoughtfulness, and unwavering dedication to justice.

I am so grateful to have been one of your clerks. Thank you for taking a chance on me and for setting such an incredible example of what it means to serve with dignity and excellence.

Happy retirement, Judge Venable, and best wishes in this next chapter. 🎉

My mom wrote a book about her love story with my dad, weaving together her old diary entries from when they first met, dated and eventually married. She adds her reflections now, and it is a beautiful way to keep my dad’s legacy alive while reminding us that good things truly come to those who wait.

Today was her book signing, and I am so grateful to everyone who showed up, from my bestie from first grade to my Sorors from the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter, to the St. Thomas church group, former colleagues from Mott Community College, our neighbors and the friends who grew up with my dad. It means so much to keep his legacy going. If you are interested, the link to the book is in my bio.
