Long Dogs Tracking and Recovery

Proud to have been the volunteer dog tracking team for this amazing event (HeroHunt/Music City Chapter of SCI) at Fall Creek Falls and the Whitetails and Heros event in Hiwassee Refuge this past October. The dogs and I love spending time with our amazing veterans! 🇺🇸♥️💙

This unique smell is how tracking dogs know which deer to follow. When a deer is injured, it releases pheremones from this gland that provide information to the dog (or coyote) on how badly injured the animal is - if it is mortally wounded, the dogs prey drive locks in and will be super interested in following that unique track to the deer.

Sometimes an injured deer releases a bunch of pheromone leading a dog to initially think it is mortally wounded but as time goes on and the deer realizes he is not that hurt then the scent level drastically reduces and can explain why dogs may suddenly lose interest when the deer turns out to not be a dead deer walking
