Rural Alaska Students in One-health Research (RASOR) Program launches high school researches on home shores through mentorship and college prep in rural Southeast Alaska. RASOR students conduct environmental research in their communities with local tribal mentors while earning college credit online by engaging in courses designed to support rural Alaska students in their first college experience.

73 high school students from 13 different schools enrolled in UAS's Biology 175: Current Topics in Marine Research, which revolves around participation in the Sitka Sound Science Center's Whalefest. The weekend kicked off Friday morning with an ocean trivia competition for which 14 teams competed in a series of multiple choice, short answer, and specialty questions. Over the weekend the mornings were filled with hands on workshops set up by SSSC. In the afternoon students attended the 3 day symposium, hearing from 9 different speakers, and attending breakout sessions with the presenters to delve deeper into their research topics. Of these students, 13 were enrolled in the RASOR program. They arrived early to Whalefest and attended an additional day full of activities based around Tribal research in Southeast. These students heard from local and visiting scientists about science happening right now, and learned about how local knowledge and observations can be beneficial to their home communities. 03/07/2026

Sign up for RASOR Data and Quantitative Thinking Class! Learn how to make graphs, use Microsoft Excel and interpret data. This class is open to dual enrollment high school students and the community.
