One thing that I have learned in Orton-Gillingham-based training is not to "make rules that expire". This rule has expired. :-)

I often use craft sticks to teach place value by bundling and unbundling groups of ten and groups of 100. This is a photo of me posing with my '1,000' craft stick bundle (and looking surprised).
