Developer Nick Johnson says he was "targeted by an extremely sophisticated phishing attack [that] exploits a vulnerability in Google's infrastructure."

The email he received came from [email protected], which passes the DKIM [DomainKeys Identified Mail] signature check. Gmail did not display any warning, and even puts it in the same conversation as other, legitimate security alerts.

The email warned Johnson that Google had received a subpoena for his account. A link led to a convincing support page hosted on sites.google.com – “clever,” Johnson says, because people trust the google.com domain.

How did the hackers spoof a valid email?

Johnson blames two flaws in Google’s infrastructure. First, the outdated sites.google.com lets anyone host content with scripts on a google.com subdomain. Second, the email exploited Google OAuth and the use of “me” in Gmail, making it look legitimate.

Johnson reported the issue, but Google initially dismissed it. They later acknowledged the bug and pledged a fix.
