The Grove Learning Collective

Play and autonomy are the ingredients that best support deep and lasting social/emotional skills. Here one student is teaching others how to best kill and gut a fish. First they are connecting with each other; learning to negotiate and trust one another. They then started discussing how the fish might feel. After concluding that it’s probably scared and in pain, they decided to do the process as quickly and carefully as they could to ease the fish’s experience.
As an educator with a health and wellness background, this is the ultimate example of cultivating the “soft skills” that are becoming more and more crucial in today’s world.

Civics project exploring Democracy and self-governance, Knife throwing, Dungeons and Dragons, tag at Kendrick Park, 3-D printing… This sounds like fun opportunities that might fill an entire week. This was just one day @ The Grove Summer Camp.

The Grove Learning Collective will be running a “Summer Self-Directed Learning Camp” June 8th - July 30th, 2026; Empowering Kids Through Leadership, Responsibility, and Community!

At The Grove Learning Collective, we believe in the power of self-directed learning! Our summer camp is designed to cultivate leadership skills, foster responsibility, and build a sense of community among kids. In their paper, “Grown Unschoolers’, Evaluations of their Unschooling Experiences,” Dr. Peter Gray and Dr. Gina Riley found that self-directed learners as adults commonly demonstrate self-direction and take initiative in their learning, are self-motivated, and are very adaptable; concluding that self-directed learners “learn how to learn.”

May 2nd, we will have our final spring Open House and discuss all the benefits a space like The Grove can provide for your child’s long term outcomes.
