A TRIP TO THE STORE was different then! A leafless tree was at the right, two dogs were resting under the wagon, a woman was entering the store. L.A. Huffman took this rarely seen photo of the Busby (Montana) General Store.
Busby, on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, was a 2-3 day ride by horse from Miles City.
Nearby sites include Custer"s last camp prior to the Battle of the Little Big Horn and the Rosebud Battlefield State Park, where Crazy Horse led strong Sioux and Cheyenne forces against Gen. Crook"s 1000 men. After heavy casualties, Crook retraced his path back to Wyoming rather than advance toward the Little Big Horn.
Busby is midway between Crow Agency and Lame Dear on US Hwy 212. Current population is 750. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin. Click image to clarify/enlarge if using a PC.

GAG PORTRAIT, perhaps 1880s. Photographer Robert C. Morrison had arrived in Miles City (Montana) in 1878, just two years after Custerโs annihilation. In addition to documenting frontier life, Morrison had an eye for the unusual. He made rare captures of brothels, photographing female s*x workers, their customers, and room interiors. The Morrison heirs donated 3,600 glass-plate negatives to the Montana Historical Society (MHS). Included in that lot were 500 historically important negatives by Fort Keogh photographer Christian Barthelmess.
The MHS has yet to post ANY of these Morrison and Barthelmess images. I hope that the under-funded MHS can recruit volunteers to scan images and post them to their website before another generation dies without getting to see them. If our history is not online, our youth will never see it. Having seen several Morrison images, I can say that his work is certainly as worthy of a book as were L.A. Huffman, Evelyn Cameron, and Christian Barthelmess. Commentary and a bit of Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

Time is running out for me too,
And life has left scars on my face.
Though my body is growing old,
My soul will always stay young.
The day will come,
When I too will cross the bridge,
And leave this earthly life behind.
But as long as you remember me, I"ll live in your heart.
My soul will stay with you,
You will see my face in the rising sun.
My eyes in the stars,
That look down on you every night.
I"ll look back one last time,
And then my form will be slowly swallowed up on the other shore.
My own poem.
