Native Rites

GROS VENTRE Natives, 1887. The hand-tinted photo was by Fort Benton photographer Dan Dutrto. Dutro should be one of West"s more famous photographers, but his negatives were thrown away in 1929.

Identities are listed in the first comment on my page. In 1904, only 535 tribe members were reported to have survived. Renowned photographer Roland W. Reed apprenticed and then partnered with Dutro in 1896-97. Text and a bit of Photoshop restoration of a low-res file by Gary Coffrin.
