Did you know there are four different types of blood donations? Whole blood, power red, platelet, and plasma.
Whole blood is the most common donation that you will see. It takes all your blood and uses for trauma patients or for surgeries. These types of donations take up to an hour and accepts all blood types. You can donate up to 6 times a year or every 56 days.
Power Red donation is the type of donation that only takes the red blood cells out of your donation. You are hooked up to a machine that takes a pint of blood and separates your red blood cells from your plasma and platelets. The plasma and platelets are returned back to your body after your donation is completed. This process takes up to an hour and half of your time and the ideal blood type is O positive and negative and A / B negative.
Platelet donation is the same process as power red donation except it takes your platelet and some plasma and returns the remainder of plasma and your red blood. This takes a bit longer, about three hours to donate. You can donate up to 24 times a year with platelet and the ideal blood type would be A positive and negative, B positive, O positive, and AB positive and negative.
Plasma donation is the same process as platelet and power red donations except your plasma is what is used and your platelets and red blood cells are returned to your body. This process takes about an hour and half of your time and the ideal blood type is AB positive and negative. You can donate up to 13 times a year.
