What is with all those letters and names? Does your head scramble when you see FVRCP, RCP, Distemper Vaccine, Combo Shot, Core Shot and aren't really sure what that means?

Let's break it down fast!

🐱FVRCP/RCP/HCP/"Distemper" - All the same thing - this is a feline companion's core combination vaccine. It covers:
R - Rhinotracheitis
C - Calici
P - Panleukopenia
It is considered a series - and that means a cat should receive a minimum of 2 in three to four week successions to be considered complete and good for 1yr.*
-When it is boostered after 1yr, it's longevity depends on your cat's lifestyle, exposure, and risk.

And what about dogs? - they have a few more letters ::
🐶 DAPPv/DHPP/5 way/Da2pp//DHLPP/"Distemper/Parvo" - All are very similar but a little bit different.. - this is a canine companion's core combination vaccine. It covers:
D - Distemper
A/H - Adenovirus type 1 and type 2/aka Hepatitis
L - Leptospirosis
P - Parainfluenza
P - Parvovirus
This too is considered a series - that means your dog needs a minimum of 2 in three to four week successions to be considered completed and good for 1 yr.*

*Kittens and puppies need more in their series to be protected!*

FAQ time --

Q - Is my dog(cat) too old for surgery?

A - In short, no, age is not a disease!
- In long, anesthesia can affect all animals differently but with proper protocols and monitoring, it is safe. Because even older intact dogs and cats benefit from spay/neuter surgery!

** Every heat a female has it increases her risk of malignant (spreading) mammary cancer and pyometra, an infection in the uterus that can quickly become fatal if emergency surgery is not conducted.
** Male dogs can develop prostate enlargement (BPH) that makes urinating and bowel movements painful and difficult, necessitating castration in short order.

When we say older, what age do we mean? Our line of "old" is 7 years of age! That means our clinic will recommend additional exams or items prior to surgery and anesthesia for your pet's best interest.
