What got me so interested in health years ago was actually watching Food Inc. during a college class. The information wasn’t really what stood out to me though. It was actually the failure of the judiciary system to act when evidence was shown against large agricultural companies.
.
This is one of the most important lessons I ever learned: if you want to reach or attain something good (health, career, relationship, etc.), don’t expect the system to have your back and do the right thing “in your best interest.” There are way too many examples across multiple industries that bare that out. You have to do it yourself.
.
Also- you can’t have free choice if you don’t have all the information available. I don’t know a theme that is more applicable today than this.
.
What is important to understand, though, is what GRAS is. Originally, the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) was meant to provide guidance for companies seeking to classify new food ingredients as safe, or GRAS.
.
GRAS is rooted in a law that came into action in 1958. The goal was to have companies demonstrate the safety of ingredients that ultimately end up in foods.
.
The law was written with exemptions for ingredients like vinegar and baking soda, which were widely considered to be safe at the time. The point of this loophole in the law was to allow ingredients that were already tested through time to get a pass, and these were more natural ingredients, like vinegar.
.
In 1997, the FDA amended the law, allowing companies to decide FOR THEMSELVES which ingredients qualified as GRAS. The companies began policing themselves, and reporting is voluntary. Sound familiar?
.
This is how genetically modified foods came into play. GM foods were first allowed into the human food supply in the US, based on the claim that they are GRAS – despite the fact that none has ever fulfilled the strict legal criteria that define GRAS status.
.
The clip is from The C Word Movie.
