One of the most common questions we get is: “How would 80% of Missourians pay more if income tax is repealed?”

Here’s why.

Missouri still has to pay for roads, schools, emergency services, public safety, and other essential services. If the state eliminates income tax revenue, that money has to come from somewhere else.

Under Amendment 5, the proposal allows lawmakers to increase and expand sales and use taxes to replace lost income tax revenue.

Sales taxes hit retirees and working families especially hard because everyone pays them, regardless of income. Groceries, clothing, household items, school supplies, vehicle purchases, online purchases, and everyday necessities could all become more expensive.

Higher-income earners generally benefit the most from eliminating income tax, while middle- and lower-income Missourians end up paying a larger share of their income through increased sales taxes.

That’s why many analysts estimate roughly 80% of Missourians would ultimately pay more overall.

Repealing income tax isn’t free. The cost just gets shifted elsewhere.

On August 4, vote NO on 5.
