Burke Museum
The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, located on the University of Washington campus, is an active research museum that hosts a collection of 18 million artifacts and specimens ranging from canoes and gemstones to dinosaur fossils and the world’s largest collection of bird wings. With research and lab work that happens in plain view of visitors and three floors of one-of-a-kind objects,
We have a whole set of specialized freezers just to store tiny pieces of fish flesh. Why? We want their DNA! Scientists from around the world request tissue samples from us so that they can sequence the genomes of fish for research. This results in describing new species, medical innovations, and even helps the FDA catch seafood fraudsters!
The specific project we talk about in this clip is a collaboration with NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center here in Seattle. They do the DNA sequencing and uploading to the Barcode of Life database while we provide the expert identification of the species and keep the voucher specimens and duplicate tissue samples here.
This is a clip from our recent video: How to Send Fish in The Mail.
