The Light

This song was written in the thick of the pandemic. I had just lived through a near death experience battling Covid in early 2020, and the world was still mostly at a standstill.

My daughter Grace and I were trapped at home but we were deeply entrenched in the parallel universe known as Stranger Things. The show felt like a monumental work of art, and it tugged at my throwback heart to the nostalgic 80’s childhood I once knew. I felt a sadness for the loss of time but a new energy for life and music.

I reached out to a few handfuls of my fellow songwriters and asked them if they could articulate the way this season made them feel. They all sent me one or two sentences regarding the devastating blow that the pandemic took on the local music scene. So, I pieced them together and fashioned a new song.

The melody felt very foreign…yet it came from a place I’d always wanted to write from… honesty and strength. Strength in a seemingly harrowing moment.

I will never forget taking it to rehearsal with the new band… and feeling it rise to an entirely new place. Like somehow all those years of athletic competition finally had a soundtrack. One I had created with the community around me.

Making music isn’t a lucrative business at this level… but when it’s inside you… you really have no choice but to get it out into the world. So to my bandmates William Mapp, Matt Teske and Larson Haakenstad… I am forever grateful for what we have created. Brooks you’re a master (pun intended) and Peter Donovan, thank you so much for helping me create this video, you are simply the best.

Thank you to the music community in Seattle for what you have given… I am so very thankful. This homage doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of the immense talent in our great city, these are just some of the folks who have been instrumental to me.

To all of the photographers and videographers who work grueling hours to capture what is it we do on stage, thank you… so very much, you are such a gift to all of us.
