The general public has a sense of what it’s like to be a firefighter. But what does your typical day look like?

“It may surprise people that around 85% of our runs are medical-related. A lot of responses we go on are for people who are sick. It can be anything from someone breaking their ankle to their grandmother having a heart attack or a car accident. Very few of our calls are actually fire related. But that’s part of what I enjoy about this job. Every day is different and it’s an exciting opportunity to help others.” – Firefighter, Trayvaugn Cobbs.

What surprised you most about joining the fire service?

“Something I didn’t expect was how different the culture of the fire service is. That was something that was harder to understand for me than the physical components of the job. There is a tremendous amount of history in the fire service and the firefighters here are very serious about their jobs. I learned a lot in the first couple of years about taking ownership of being a firefighter and taking this job as serious as the public expects us to.” – Firefighter, Allison King.
