In the summer of 2002, the UW GenOM Project was launched at the University of Washington. This outreach effort is the first of its kind funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute and is a national model for minority programs. It includes undergraduate and high school research, academic training in the life sciences, scholarships, and partnerships with other minority outreach programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Attend remote training sessions prior to the start of the program, which will be scheduled for May and June.
• Mentor ALVA participants.
• Coordinate with the ALVA staff and instructors on timing of online instruction, technology used, feedback and evaluation, and input from the students. Make recommendations for adapting to student needs.
• Coordinate with ALVA staff on including seminars from other summer research programs around the country

• Attend staff orientation and weekly staff meetings.
• Carry out all duties assigned by the UW GenOM Project and College of Engineering staff

Qualifications:
• Completed two years of studies at the University of Washington; and be majoring or focusing in STEM.
• Be able to attend to the well-being of the students as much as possible, including emotional/mental health.
• Be able to work with students from a diverse set of backgrounds, and support each student based on their individual needs so they can have the best experience possible in the program.
• Previous experience working with other students in a mentorship role.
• Demonstrate the ability to enforce discipline fairly and to work with participants who may have differing abilities, motivational levels, backgrounds, learning styles, and access to remote learning.
• Pass a criminal background check.
• Previous experience with the ALVA programs (either as a participant, instructor, volunteer, or tutor).
• Multi-task, work quickly and effectively under pressure and problem solve when issues arise.
• Communicate effectively with the ALVA staff in a collaborative way

Compensation:
• Summer Program Community Development Assistants will receive a stipend of $3,000 each.

Latoya and I are seeking your ideas and input. As spring quarter progresses, we will be working with the University of Washington, including the research labs, to evaluate what we can or cannot do for the summer. Three major components are dorm housing, in-person classes, and access to research labs. If any or all of those components become impossible, then we hope to modify ALVA so that the participants would still have a valuable experience.

If you have any thoughts or ideas about potential creative solutions, could you please forward those to Lisa and Latoya? If you could think about what has made ALVA most impactful for you in the long run, that will help us to do the best we can by the 2020 students. In the meantime, we hope that you and those who are important to you stay healthy.
