Missing Jeanne Baret
Acrylic and colored pencil on cotton kitchen towel
16 X 24β Sold
She was a French 18C botanist, naturalist and explorer. Disguised as a man, she used the name Jean Baret to gain access to an expedition on ships becoming the first woman who circumnavigated the world. She was an expert botanist and took the job of valet to naturalist Philibert Commerson.
She had already had a son with him and had to give him up for adoption. Commerson was sickly so Baret collected the specimens herself and did much of the work carrying and recording specimens. It is recorded that he called her a "beast of burden". While over seventy species are named in honor of Commerson, only one, Solanum baretiae, honors Baret.
This and other new pieces will be showing in the at LGM & LCS Studios, May 30 & 31, 11-4pm, number 12 on the tour guide. Showing will be myself, Lucy Gentry, Lynn Helbrecht and Rose Nicholas. Come see!
I will be giving a talk in the studio on Saturday May 30th at 1pm.
Hope to see you there. Lynn will be talking on Sunday at 2pm, so if you miss my talk, come see Lynn, then speak to me after or before. :)
