An important statement on fast fashion from the Georgetown Steam plant Science Fair a couple weekends ago:

"The rise of the fast fashion industry in the mid-to-late 20th century has led to a global environmental crisis built on a model of overconsumption and waste. The industry now consumes 93 billion cubic meters of water and generates up to 10% of global carbon emissions annually—a figure that surpasses international flights and shipping combined. 85% of all textiles end up in landfills, where synthetic fibers take centuries to decompose. Meanwhile, the simple act of washing our clothes releases millions of tons of plastic microfibers into our oceans, with an estimated 35% of all microplastics in the sea originating from our clothes. This cycle of rapid overproduction and disposal, fuelled by a complex web of environmental and ethical damage, makes the rise of the fashion industry one of the world’s most significant ecological threats."
