Mothersland – Shahzoda Samarqandi Mahtab has translated herself into her mother, and she has translated the past to make it her own.
Sometimes, a review reveals aspects of a work you've completely forgotten or didn't even fully realize. They key is having two talented, insightful writers involved, who can appreciate and process real history and fictional characters and make it all come alive. I'm lucky enough to work with an outstanding pair of such writers: Shahzoda Samarqandi, author of Mothersland, and Olga Zilberbourg, who wrote the smart, appreciative review linked below. Read the review! Read the book!

S. Merwin attributes the unique tension and power of Thomas Wyatt’s verse attracts me devotedly to the work of Jessica Fisher and Carl Phillips.”
