📍Casa Mila / La Pedrera
⏳ 1910 —2018
La Pedrera-Casa Milà
https://instagram.com/p/CHi-COpBCiK/
🇬🇧English:
The Casa Milà also known as La Pedrera or The Quarry, is located in Passeig de Gràcia
It was constructed between 1906 and 1910 by Antoni Gaudi, and it was his last buildings, before he completely dedicated himself to the Sagrada Familia.
Random Facts:
* Pere Milà and Roser Segimon were an upper class couple who, like most well-to-do families in Barcelona, wanted to live on Passeig de Gràcia, paradigm of bourgeois splendour
* After Milà and Segimon married in 1905, they invested part of the inheritance on a plot of land on the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer Provença, and left it in Gaudí’s skillful hands, who at the time was completing the famous Casa Batlló renovation.
* Nonetheless, differences soon arose between Gaudí, who now aged 54 and at his most creative, wanted to work with total freedom, and the developers, who were dissatisfied with his elevated budget and daring constructive and decorative ideas. •Gaudi went over the budget, he also make it taller than it was allowed at the time and one of the pillars of the façade occupied a part of the sidewalk of Passeig de Gràcia. The Mila Family payed a fine to make it legal.
* Society didn’t seem prepared either for such a radical work, with the newspapers of the time publishing the negative comments and jokes made. But now since it reopen in 1996, over 20 million people from all over the world have visited La Pedrera, making the average 3,000 visitors a day.
* Designed and built in art nouveau style
* Gaudi designed the Casa Mila exclusively with natural forms, in result not a single right angle can be found.
* Was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1984
