The November 28th, 2022 eruption of Mauna Loa was an incredible sight to witness. After arriving at our vantage point around sunset of that evening we waited, hoping that there would be a break in the cloud cover. After nearly an hour the first views of the lava flow broke through the red stained clouds. Shortly after the the fissures became visible and sky cleared up over Mauna Loa revealing the magnitude of the eruption. On this first night the wonder and power of nature was fully apparent as we questioned what affect this eruption would have on our island community. Thankfully the traffic was the worst of it and we got to experience first hand how truly amazing and special Hawai’i is.
We also felt blessed that we were able to witness this event since we moved to Seattle just weeks after the eruption. 05/14/2023
