The symbolic sparkle of the diamond represents purity of fidelity or faithfulness and strength. The suitor would go to the father or guardian and get his blessing before presenting his intended with the ring. It is customary to place the diamond ring on the fourth finger of the left hand. An early source reported that this finger contains the vena amoris or “vein of love” which connects back to the heart.
