Saturday! Tacoma! La Resistencia!
La Resistencia is a grassroots organization led by undocumented immigrants and people of color who have been oppressed by the immigration enforcement system . We are based in Washington State working to end the detention of immigrants and stop deportations. Originally founded in March 7th 2014 to support a hunger strike launched by over 1,200 people detained in Tacoma to protest their confinement, La Resistencia began under the umbrella of the national campaign as “NWDC Resistance.” Today, La Resistencia is led by the experts who know the system better than anyone, those who have been detained or have had relatives in deportation proceedings. We support and engage with people detained at the Northwest Detention Center who organize for their own survival and in protest against the detention and deportation regime. We are a grassroots immigrant led group that organizes across the prison barrier. Our goal is to shut down the NWDC, and to end all detentions and deportations in Washington State .

How are we going to win?

If they build it, they will come: We work to free people detained by ICE, shut down Washington State's privately-owned GEO Group's detention center, and stop ICE from hunting down our people in our State to be detained or surveilled. We oppose any kind of detention, physical or virtual.

We have achieved a lot of victories so far! In our State we have HB1090, a law that passed in 2021 which prohibits profiting private prisons and detention centers for adults. We also stopped deportation flights taking off from Seattle in 2018. Both of these wins have been contested in courts, and although both have lost there, it just proves we can't rely on the law alone to be able to win. But we continue using all tools available to pressure all elected officials at all levels to be accountable and fight to end the terror of immigration enforcement, detention and deportation.

In October 2021 people detained won a lawsuit against GEO Group for stealing their wages and not paying them the Washington minimum wage. Yet the detention center remains open and operating at a smaller capacity. We must continue the fight because we are really close! That's why we just worked and won SHB1470- WA state agencies are now obliged to inspect unannounced complaints about detention conditions, and it provides private right of law to people detained. Join the movement to free people from prison and border enforcement systems!
