《双吊挂》”Shuang Diao Gua”
道教乐 Daoist religious music
三弦 (Sanxian) : Shane Shi
古筝 (Guzheng) : Yashar Garzan
This is an instrumental version of a Daoist religious piece of music my friend and I recorded for a virtual performance for the upcoming Spring festival!
The traditional setting of the music is that the melody is sung with a religious text by multiple people and accompanied with a variety of percussion instruments which have different spiritual meanings. My friend and I record the melody as a simple duet.
All Daoist temples use, pretty much, the same music. However, the temples perform the melodies with the musical characteristics of the region. This recording is, as far as I know, the only recording existing of the musical variation found in Sichuan.

My good friend, Brian Baron (aka Stars At Dawn), recorded me performing an old Chinese story. A slight variation of “The Vinegar Tasters,” this old story tells of three individuals drinking tea with the most peculiar ingredients. What flavor would you taste if given this tea?
The music used is a combination of improvisation and traditional music. The traditional GuZheng styles of Henan (河南), Shaanxi (陕西), Zhejiang (浙江), and Chaozhou (潮州) are prominently used in this performance. A lovely story just in time for the holidays and the coming new year!
The biggest thanks to Brian and his family for this recording! They have such big hearts and encourage me as a musician and as a person ❤️ Help out my good friend, Brian (Stars At Dawn), by liking his videos and subscribing to his YouTube channel! He’s been making music for years but he just started releasing his stuff in 2020. And he has more to come including an intensely fun collaboration with myself! My personal favorite song that he’s released is one titled “I am Not Alone” available on his channel. Very expressive and touching. Check out his website and social media in the “about” section of the YouTube channel.

A clip of an annual Chinese New Year television program in 2017 titled 同乐江苏 (TongLeJiangSu) “Shared Joy in Jiangsu.” I played a small part in a quartet of international musicians accompanied by a dancing soloist. Mixing the musical timbre and elements of the oriental and occidental instruments. The music that is played is a Jiangsu folk song called 太湖美 (TaiHuMei) “Beauty of Lake Tai.” 😊

《四段锦》(SiDuanJin) “Brocade in Four Sections”
“清风弄竹
山鸣谷应
小溪流水
普天同庆”

“A cool wind playfully makes its way through the bamboo forests,
The birds of the mountains call out to one another through the valleys,
In a small stream - water is flowing,
The entire universe is in mutual celebration.”
Brocade in Four Sections is one of the great masterpieces of northern GuZheng music. Coming from the ShanDong style of northern GuZheng playing, Brocade in Four Sections has four movements separated not by pauses (the music is played continuously unblocked like the spirit of the musician), but by the speed in which the movements are played and by the names they are given. In this piece, the movements are named after a line of poetry that was given earlier in this description. Can you feel the sounds and celebrations of nature in the melodies? In this last movement, named “The Entire Universe is in Mutual Celebration,” the music is partying so hard that the left hand can’t resist joining in! Opposites become complementary, yin and yang become one. Indeed, the universe is in mutual celebration 🤗☯️
