Standardized Patients (SP) make a difference in educating future health care professionals. At Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, SPs provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their clinical skills, even in their first year of medical school! A Standardized Patient is a person trained to portray a real life patient in a standardized, scripted clinical scenario. Standardized pati
ents provide Geisinger Commonwealth medical students the opportunity to practice their interviewing, counseling, physical exam, communication and other skills that contribute to their development as professionals in the field of medicine. The use of Standardized Patients in the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center at Geisinger Commonwealth allows students to practice in a “safe,” controlled, observable environment where they can develop, practice and demonstrate competence of skills they will use on real patients. The SP will be trained to evaluate student performances and provide constructive feedback. The SP will learn specific history and/or physical signs and symptoms for patient roles; consistently and accurately portray specific patient roles as required by scenarios; consent to interviews and/or physical exams by medical students; respond to questions in a consistent manner according to the script, scenario and training; demonstrate flexibility, reliability and punctuality regarding scheduling and assignments; complete scenario checklists and provide feedback to students regarding behaviors and skills.
