On July 9th Scottsbluff Fire responded to two fires throughout the day.

The first fire was a vehicle fire at 04:41 AM where a passerby observed a fire near the fuel tank. Engine One, and Scottsbluff Two (Fire Marshal) were assigned to that call. That fire was ruled suspicious in nature and Scottsbluff PD has taken over the case.

The second fire occurred in the 500 block of West Overland, which was a confirmed structure fire. Engine One, Engine Three, Scottsbluff Two (Fire Marshal), and Scottsbluff One (Fire Chief) were assigned to this call. Through the investigation process it was determined that a juvenile was discharging fireworks within the home which caused a bed to catch on fire leading to $50,000 in property damage. The family is being assisted by Firefighter Ministries as a result of the fire.

We want to thank the Scotts Bluff County CERT team for their assistance on providing traffic control for the structure fire, and rehab to the firefighters on scene due to the warm temperatures. The CERT team has become a very valuable resource on fire scenes, and on a variety of other scenes and we appreciate their partnership, and their willingness to step up and assist. We also want to thank Scottsbluff Police Department for all their assistance as well on the structure fire and car fire!

We hope everyone had a safe Fourth of July celebration!

While this year proved to have it's challenges with lack of moisture, you, the community proved that we can all be adults and try and be responsible when it comes to discharging fireworks.

This chart reflects how many calls for service we responded to as the fire department, this does not reflect calls for service from Scottsbluff Police. Within the 10 day period we responded to two firework related calls, a slight increase from last year where we only had one firework related call.

The two firework related calls were:
- Smoldering discharged firework debris
- A complaint about juveniles discharging fireworks into a park.

While the holiday has ended, fire prevention does not. Fire Prevention is a year round activity that everyone is responsible for, and our biggest method for preventing fires, is education, hence why we did several posts regarding fireworks this last week, and we will continue to push out educational material.

Thank you to our firefighters, the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center, Scottsbluff Police Department, EMS, and the community for making this Independence Day a safe and successful holiday!

"Someone is discharging fireworks in the area (during legal times)" not an appropriate use of 911

"My dog is chasing the neighbors with a roman candle" appropriate use of 911

Our friends at the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center are always busy taking a variety of calls, but when you call 911 for non-emergencies, it ties up the system for someone who may be having a life threatening emergency.

For non-emergent calls you may call either (308)436-5880 or (308)436-6666

Shopping for fireworks? These cards have made their way to all the firework stands in the area and will be dispersed out to the public.

On one side is Fire Safety tips, and on the other side is the fireworks ordinance for the City of Gering and City of Scottsbluff.

We want to extend a huge thank you to Scottsbluff Professional Firefighter's Local 1454 for sponsoring these cards this year, thus coming at a zero cost to both the Fire Departments and Police Departments.

We also want to extend a thank you to all the firework stands, Fireworks Unlimited, Discount Fireworks and the Bellino Firework Stands for allowing us to hand out these informational cards, and Luna Bean Coffee Shop for also allowing us to leave a small stack of these cards!
