A starter motor draws high current from the batteries, typically 300 to 400 amperes. This current flows through the heavy-gauge cables that directly connect the battery to the starter. The driver switches the current flow using the ignition key. The starter motor is energized directly by the vehicle batteries.

The function of the starter motor is to convert electrical energy into sufficient mechanical torque to turn a high-compression diesel engine. The output torque from the starter motor pinion is imparted to ring gear teeth on the engine flywheel.

A cranking circuit must be capable of starting an engine even under the most demanding conditions such as cold weather extremes.
