A flock of turkey came to visit the cows on our back pasture today.

This is a day old heifer calf out of a first-calf heifer. The white is from the Charolais crossed heifer. The sire is our Brangus (all black) bull.

I am weaning (separating from the cow) the brown/orange calf that is six months old and keeping the yearling calf with her as a companion to help endure the ordeal. Calves are best weaned at about 6 months to help the cow prepare for her next calf with which she is already pregnant. To keep the older steer from eating the weaning calf's weaning feed, I have to separate the two or use a creep feeder. The opening on the creep feeder is low so that only the smaller calf can enter and leave. Both calves were sired by a brangus bull. The younger calf is out of a limousin crossed with a short-horn. The older calf is out of a black angus.
